The 2025 Youth Water Council
The 2025 Youth Water Council (YWC) features a group of 12 high school students collaborating towards improved environmental health in the North Saskatchewan River watershed.

My name is Abi. I am incredibly passionate about botany and ecology. Ask anyone else on the council and they will agree I am always ready to share facts about plants and ecosystems. My favourite activities are hiking, kayaking, skiing, and being outdoors in general. If not adventuring I love reading ecology books, I recently finished Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass.

I'm Aven. I live in Fort Saskatchewan and I like to go alpine skiing and camping in my spare time. My favourite subjects at school are math and science. I joined the council because I wanted to learn more about the watershed and help educate others.

I'm a Grade 10 student from Edmonton with a passion for piano, art, and sports. I've always cherished spending time in nature with family, especially around the North Saskatchewan River Valley, where I go on daily walks. My time outdoors deepened my connection to nature and awareness of environmental issues in the community, inspiring me to take action to protect the watershed.

I live in Edmonton, and enjoy playing sports, listening to music and reading in my spare time. Math and physics are my favourite shool subjects. I joined the Water Council as a fun way to meet new people and work on a cohesive project which to put my unique skills into action.

I live in Edmonton and enjoy baking, rock climbing, and spending time outdoors. My favorite school subjects are math and biology. I also have a strong interest in science and research related to environmental sustainability. I joined the Youth Water Council to learn more about the local environment and help create innovative solutions to water-related challenges in the North Saskatchewan watershed. This is my second year on the council.

I joined the Youth Water Council to engage in a space where I could have my voice heard, but to also learn from others about environmental subjects; such as watershed management and hydrology. I'm passionate about political science and geography, which is why my favorite subject is social studies, but that does not stop me from having a profound interest in the physical and chemical sciences. I am the co-president of the Model UN club at my school and I'm part of the Youreka program!

I live in Edmonton, and my favourite school subjects are Math and English. Outside of academics, I enjoy running, photography, and solving the daily New York Times puzzles. I joined the council because I want to learn about the watershed and create positive change for the environment in my community.

I live in Parkland County and love to spend time with my family skiing, hiking, and kayaking. My favourite place to be is in the mountains. I joined the council for a second year, as I wanted to continue learning about the watershed and making a positive impact on the environment. I'm heading to university to become a teacher after graduation and I I hope to instill these values in my future students!

Hi, my name is Paras. My favourite subjects are science, particularly biology. I enjoy biology due to the profound effects nature has on us and that we have on nature. In my culture, plants are a key part of lifestyle, whether that is for healing, or eating purposes. This lead me to aspire to learn more about the environment, which lead to the water council. Although it wasn’t plants specifically, water is needed for plants, and if it contains impurities, then the areas surrounding the water will not be in good condition.

My name is Samantha. From exploring environmental stories to crafting visual art, I enjoy blending science with creativity. I'm passionate about using advocacy and leadership to drive meaningful change. Through the Youth Water Council, I hope to protect local watersheds and inspire others to take action.
