Environment & Biodiversity

Biodiversity – having a wide range of ecosystems, ecological processes, species and genes is necessary for human existence.

Biodiversity in the North Saskatchewan River watershed has always been under threat – from competing land uses, pollution, population growth, climate changes and human activities.

In Canada there is a federal, provincial and territorial working group on biodiversity. In the Province of Alberta, under Water for Life, Alberta Environment Sustainable Resource Development, cites "Healthy aquatic ecosystems" as one of its three main goals.

Under Water for Life, the North Saskatchwan Watershed Alliance, one of eleven Watershed Planning and Advisory Councils (WPACs) in the Province of Alberta, is also committed to healthy aquatic ecosystems.
