All communities throughout the North Saskatchewan River watershed impact the form and function of the land in many ways. In the past, when populations were small and development minimal, the implications of human impact on the land draining into the main river system were not obvious.
Today, with over a million people in the greater Edmonton area, we are learning that we must pay closer attention to how we live, play and work in the watershed. e.g. Prior to 1980, snow removed from Edmonton City streets went directly into the river. Today the City of Edmonton has Environmentaly Friendly Snow Storage.
Riding All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) or Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) is a popular recreational activity in Alberta. Find out how to reduce environmental impact: in the Municipal Guide p. 165
